Sciatica Study Now Underway - Participants Needed

A Double Blind Study is currently being conducted at Bowen Therapy Clinics in conjunction with the Boucher College of Naturopathic Medicine and IN-CAM (The Canadian Interdisciplinary Network for Complementary & Alternative Medicine Research). Participants are being sought for this study, their treatment is covered by the research grant and they must be between 25 and 55 years old and have sciatica type symptoms. Bowen For Kids - by Dr. Jilla Kahrobaei ND

In my first year of medicine during a course on the philosophy of naturopathic medicine a guest speaker, genuine in his wisdom, advised us to “start with the children”, seeing as it is indeed during childhood that our mental, emotional and physical health is established. Instilling good habits and lifestyle choices, learning patterns of thought and behavior are what make us as the adults we are today.

Children are magnificent! They are like little sponges readily absorbing a massive amount of information and ready to take life into their hands with enthusiasm. They have incredible vitality! Notice how they bounce back from injuries and infections; from falls and fevers. Even their moods shift from sadness to joy in a matter of seconds to minutes.

When I first started incorporating bowen into my practice, it was mainly for pain management as well as an assortment of systemic disorders and imbalances. Not only did I observe decrease in pain and shifts in overall well-being, I also saw emotional releases and reactions following the bowen therapies.

Further investigation and consultation with my bowen instructor, lead me to a much more in-depth understanding of the effects of Bowen Therapy on not only the tendons, muscles and fascia but more importantly on the central nervous system.

The central nervous system is the foundation to every single action and reaction in our body. It is our delicate yet powerful nervous system that controls all sensory information and motor response. This organ system in our body starts its development at conception and keeps developing at a rapid rate during the first few years of life and continues to grow at a slower rate as we age. The plasticity of the nervous system allows for changes to occur even during adulthood given the right conditions and/ or treatments.

Therefore, it makes absolute sense to positively influence a child’s central nervous system which is highly malleable and easier to correct for structural, emotional or physiological imbalances. Further more, since the nervous system is constantly bombarded with external influences such as environmental, physical and mental stressors, it makes even more sense to correct for the overly taxed, stimulated nervous system on a regular basis to maintain its equilibrium and in turn our overall health.

Bowen Therapy works wonders on children and infants because of the fact that they are pure and wholesome. Their untainted nervous systems take on the signals along the nerve pathways just like the sponges that they are- and voila! The rest of the healing process or balancing comes from them.

So whether your child / infant has trouble sleeping, gastrointestinal discomfort or respiratory difficulties- to mention a few- bowen is a perfect choice of non-invasive gentle touch therapy that could set them off on the right path right from the start. Just imagine, if we start with our children, how much more evolved their health will be.
